As part of its mandate to improve the capacity of regional fisheries mechanisms in the Caribbean, the enhancing capacity for the adoption and implementation of Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries (EAF) in the shrimp and groundfish fisheries of the North Brazil Shelf Large Marine Ecosystem (EAF4SG) project is supporting a workshop on fisheries statistics and data analysis. The workshop, which is being held in Georgetown, Guyana takes place from 11 – 21 November 2024.

This event is a collaborative effort among the Fisheries Department of Guyana, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the Global Environment Facility (GEF), the EAF4SG project and the FISH4ACP initiative.

The workshop aims to enhance the capacity of fisheries professionals in Guyana, Suriname, and Trinidad and Tobago (TT) in collecting, analysing, and interpreting fisheries data. By strengthening data management and analysis capabilities, the project seeks to improve decision-making processes and promote sustainable fisheries management.

Key focus areas of the training include:

• Stratified Sampling: Participants will learn about the theoretical concepts and practical applications of stratified sampling, a statistical technique used to improve the precision of estimates.
• Data Analysis and Reporting: Hands-on training in data analysis using R software, a powerful statistical programming language.
• Calipseo Data Management System: Understanding the capabilities and limitations of the Calipseo system for data collection, analysis, and reporting.

By the end of the training, participants will be equipped with the necessary skills to:

• Collect accurate and reliable fisheries data.
• Analyse data using statistical methods.
• Interpret data to inform fisheries management decisions.
• Produce high-quality reports and presentations.

This training is a crucial step towards building a strong foundation for evidence-based fisheries management in the region. By empowering fisheries professionals with the latest tools and techniques, the project aims to contribute to sustainable fisheries and food security.

EAF4SG seeks to enhance the knowledge base and governance frameworks for fisheries management at local, national and sub-regional levels. It is funded GEF, implemented by FAO and executed by the UWI FFA. Guyana, Suriname, and TT are participating countries of the project which is expected to be implemented over four years.
